Alex Rodriguez heard the jokes about his noticeably darker skin, and he wants everyone to just take it easy. The former MLB player addressed his wild tan this past weekend.

A-Rod became the talk of the internet after sitting courtside during the Minnesota Timberwolves, whom he is part owner of, game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday (Feb. 23). He shared photos of himself with Stephen A. Smith, Richard Jefferson, and more on Instagram, but people could only focus on his skin pigmentation.

“This [motherf**ker] blacker than [Stephen A. Smith],” one commenter wrote with laughing emojis. The 14-time All-Star took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday (Feb. 24) to explain why he looked this way.

“Alright, everybody, I know that I’m dark,” Alex Rodriguez said in the video. “But I am Dominican, and I went on vacation and fell asleep in the sun, so everybody, calm down tranquilito y suavecito mi gente.” Some commenters were bothered by the fact he seemingly wasn’t embracing Dominicans’ African ancestry and others used it as an opportunity to get more jokes off.

“Yes we know Snooki,” one person said. “Thought you were East African for a second,” another user wrote. “Literally said, ‘I no Black, I Dominican’ lol,” another fan wrote. Even though his explanation came off as earnest, it clearly only added to the snowball of jokes and discourse that had already built up from the moment he was seen on television.

If A-Rod truly is affected by this, he can just cry in his Maybach or courtside as the Minnesota Timberwolves continue their reign atop the NBA’s Western Conference. They have been the No. 1 seed throughout most of the 2023-2024 regular season and are currently tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for first place. While there are some proven titans within that conference, and the NBA at large, this could be the season that the T’Wolves finally break through.
